Peter: How do we envision the next day? Peter Feigin: And make a long story short, I went with him, I think, the first trip was to Philadelphia and we looked at the Sixers and then we looked at probably 10 other teams over the next decade. Here's my conversation with Peter Feigin. Search I think if I had kind of the listening skills that I still need to get better at, I would be better at kind of understanding. How do we build the baselines? Make this the best operation, the best facilities and the best place to be, because we're going to go compete with everybody to win a championship. Peter is a native New Yorker. This is why you go to Parents' Night, folks. Thomas F. Leonard . He loves people and he'll go nearly to any length to support, develop and back the people he works with. He was a truly taught consumer products, marketing, and operations guy, was okay. John: Hundreds. I suggested a lot of people who would be great presidents, and lo and behold, none of them worked out to do it, so I think they had to default to me to run the company.". And how do we capture that, both digitally and on broadcast? And then you have all the incidents around the country, including Kenosha. My mother was one of the preeminent ad executives from Grey Advertising for 40 years. He's the president of the Milwaukee Bucks and he's a native New Yorker. You miss making a game-winning shot. Today I'm talking with Peter Feigin, President of the MBA's Milwaukee Bucks and formerly Vice-President of Marketing for the New York Knicks, and Director of Marketing at Six Flags. I know youve said your pops passed. Why dont we build the tenders business and leverage the Bucks brand and leverage like wereLow and behold, were up to two, almost going to get three locations on the Cream City Cluckery and its like a chicken tender business of which weve done relatively well. I actually read a whole story, theres a whole article, Peter, about your ring. There's got to be ways to get there. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. Peter: Well, I always default to the Cluckery. None could have anticipated how it would grow over the years, or the motley crew of characters who would be drawn to it. The ring features plenty of subtle and not so subtle Bucks symbolism. How can we help each other and learn from each other? I understood what a call to action was. And my brother said, "Oh, my God. Talk about that. Peter Feigin: Yeah. It found him. John: It looks amazing. Where were you on sports? Everybody at ball was just, you got to move, go leave now. Peters son, Thomas, and Dans son, Jackson, are both high school juniors and excellent players. I talk about it all the time with my wife, with my brother, with everything. I do." Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. John: Right. I played soccer and basketball, not overly blessed with athleticism. There's got to be solutions. Thats and like you said, you get to share that with all the hundreds of other rings. It was kind of like take a weekend and moonlight into a fun job. MILWAUKEE Bucks President Peter Feigin helped lead the team to its first championship in 50 years, and now he has the . Then you mirror that off the court. But you would say I kind of got to play through high school college with just grit and will and really like persistence and relentlessness. And probably about 15 years ago, Mark Lazari was looking to explore buying teams and they were in a parent conference, and my brother just said to him, Hey, my twin brothers over at Madison Square Garden he runs the marketing there he understands the P&L you probably get a kick out of him coming with you and giving you an opinion on what that was. Make a long story short, we probably spent the next 10 years having the most incredible adventures of going to do due diligence on teams that he was prospecting to buy. If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. Literally the world, like across European soccer, across everything, for people to at least stop and think. Because there's a lot of founders and entrepreneurs that listen to this as well and managing that dynamic with their family. Then I think as we keep exploring and kind of whats happening with online gambling and whats happening with NFTs and whats happening in the ticketing business, that it all evolves with technology, will be really interesting. Peter: Start from, yeah, start from the beginning. I will say one of the big advantages of the national basketball association is it truly is a collaborative, like on the court we are competitive. You can follow Peter on Twitter at PFeigin. "I got to tell you the enthusiasm Peter has brought to the city has been brought right back. Im addicted now to the operating side of the challenge of constant improvement, and how would you look at an organization and dive in there and really look to re-engineer tweak, and build for revenue growth? Number one, obviously, because like you said, its rare air, but youre learning on the job. In all, about 100 players have played in The Run over the decades, some more luminous than others. So when I talked to her, I said, hey, Ive got to tell you, first of all, the executive committee at Saturday morning run says, this is a good thing. Does he pass enough? By the way, Aaron is a fanatical basketball fan, and by the way, a regular classic Wisconsin superstar wants to come to a game, pays for his ticket wants to be left to watch the game. So, these guys are thrown into a world where they're responsible for everything, they assume they know everything, and what their experience is. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. Mike, you get it because you lived it. John: Lets step back. Ive got two kids Im working as, Id say a consultant, helping to put together a business plan. Feigin, who had held executive positions at Madison Square Garden, Marquis Jet Partners and NetJets, packed up his New York home and went to Milwaukee in 2014. The entire Saturday morning crew has done a few Zoom calls. Daniel connected the partners with Peter, then chief marketing and revenue officer of Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, to analyze the franchise from a sales and development angle. But for us, it's kind of like, "How do we make an equal playing field? You sound super excited about the future. Can you keep a competitive championship-caliber team across an era? We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. And we skewed higher than most NBA teams. Peter Feigin: Not as much as you'd like to see. Michael Red: I don't think there's anybody better. That's actually a step up from the orange vests and hard hats he's been wearing in Milwaukee, constantly checking on the construction of the Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center, the non-branded name of the arena. For more information on Engage or to book talent today, visit letsengage.com. I mean, if I didn't have real responsibilities of a family and a wife, who actually says we need to live somewhere and stuff, I could get paid in gear. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. And everyone was thrilled when Keefe showed up. "We know the reality is 18 months ago, no one would've said Giannis is one of the top five players in the NBA, so we've had really what we would call the Giannis Effect," Feigin explains. And the Milwaukee Bucks players were the catalyst for that to happen in a big way. John: You talked about your Masters of the Universe being your partners and owners and really some of the brightest people on this planet which of course, thats true. Engage is a digital booking platform. Feigin's twin brother, Daniel, is director of the upper school at New York City's Trevor Day School. Its been talked about the whole Giannis effect. View Peter Feigin's professional profile on LinkedIn. Growing up, you used to hang out, go to the garden and you were a Knicks fan or Rangers fan and Yankees or Mets. If someone kills you, theyll give you the ball, Dan Feigin said. Ive had so much fun and been in sports entertainment and aviation and in different things and its all been about every job Ive had incredibly, Ive said like, oh my God, could you imagine, like Ive died and gone to heaven. Feigin is in charge of divvying up the five-man teams at the start of the session and typically includes himself on the strongest squad. It was July. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. We sponsored Brook, the Lopez twins and you have Brook on your team, another great kid. Peter Feigin: I mean, my mouth just watered. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by. Talk a little bit about the ice cream truck, the ice cream man. It became such a healthy place to be.. And obviously, you have dealt with a little bit of this with Sterling Brown a couple years ago, so you guys happened to prepare for this a little bit. "We have a. How do you end up managing the importance of numbers and capital. I've been telling him. He wanted to keep the team, which was a big catalyst for the whole movement.". When Carter Pewterschmidt stops by in "Fresh Heir" to announce that he has made Chris Griffin the sole heir to the Pewterschmidt fortune, the family hears a crash. So, how do you navigate the ship through waters you've never been through before? How do you balance a world and a sports world, especially, thats become so excited about, what Billy Beane created in terms of data analytics and the importance of numbers with the human capital element. I watch it. Peter: Then I think youre, listen, viewer consumption, what youre talking about is whether you put on an Oculus or whether youve got five screens going up, people are now watching short form video in five to 20 second increments to absorb a game. Weve got a sophomore in college and a senior in college. Peter Feigin: And how do you rethink your strategies for retail? Peter, before I let you go, I have to ask you. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. Either it came from Khris Middleton or Jack [crosstalk 00:02:21]. Michael Red: So, the Recruiter became the President basically? Team president Peter Feigin and his wife each contributed $2,900, while Feigin's brother Daniel contributed $600. It all starts with the answer, right? It all matters what state youre in and whats going on with the legislation. You buy the Bucks, you help with that whole negotiation and you were living in New York, so you were married already and you decided. Then, I would literally leech myself. John: Its fascinating you say that. Over the years, The Run has become an indispensable part of the players weekend routines and a socioeconomic hodgepodge. We got here and kind of the first job was to look for a site and the second job was to really get public backing to build an arena, to demolish the Bradley Center and build a new arena, which were monumental big things to happen. You start with whats the goal? Thats the biggest change is the regional sports networks have changed dramatically. We always tell people, listen, if you want to work here, youre going to have to collaborate with people. And how did that all come about? And one of the incredible things that Milwaukee did not have was kind of a meeting place. Peter Feigin: Yeah, so those are two great questions. We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. We're not an organization that splits up into silos of business or basketball. Michael Red: The facilities, everything that you guys have done so far is remarkable. He captained. If youre not playing defense, theyre going to call you out, said Woodhouse, who would temper his Friday night activities in anticipation of The Run. They just happen to be huge group buys of 200-300 people with Greek flags behind the visiting bench. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. Kevin Draughon, a former student at Trevor Day School, drove on Dan Feigin, who runs the pickup games on Saturdays at the schools gym. I think it changes the landscape. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. Talk about that process. I really think its kind of a cycle of selflessness and kind of best practices. I said, oh, its so good to get all your support. They all had the space, they're at Disney, they have all the amenities. Alex Woodhouse, 34, a photographer and musician who was a three-year starter at Colgate, joined the game in his mid-20s at the urging of a friend. It just kind of really trying. But online gambling, in state by state is massive and how you can center that do you want to become part of a casino? But I think, those are the things that like, yes, you can always pay people. Just search SNOWCAST in the App Store or click here. Peter Feigin: So I think we have that balance. And from your perspective, how was the bubble? Holy cow pinch me because this is so awesome where it is.". So, he's at the All-Star game and I literally said, "It's too bad we're not on Zoom," because I'm holding these. Peter Feigin readily admits that, as president of the Milwaukee Bucks, he lives in the fantasy world of professional sports. We heard it straight from. In July 2015, Feigin basically introduced himself to Wisconsin lawmakers with a stark proposal: If $250 million in public funding was not approved -- Edens, Lasry, third owner Jamie Dinan and Kohl had already combined to put up $250 million) -- the NBA would exercise its right to buy back the Bucks from the new ownership group for $25 million more than it had paid Kohl. I think its hard to grasp where this is going, but it professionalizes players at this, Peter: point teenagers at a much earlier level than theyve ever been. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? John: Talk about and want you to share a couple of thoughts about Warren Buffett and that whole deal. You're a true friend, Peter, at least until you drop the parking ticket on me. And that's before you're worried about what a health scare is. We've gotten through conversations. John: Was Sonny Werblin still around, or was that the same? So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." Michael Red: And then with all that going on around you, I mean, navigating the waters from a business standpoint. Milwaukee Bucks President Peter Feigin speaking at the opening of the team's new training center in downtown Milwaukee as Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett . Peter Feigin, youre making an amazing impact. We can expose it as like, "Here, we're the example in Milwaukee." So, for us, it goes back to constantly being really honest and forthright about where you are and how you can improve. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. Were you looking at other franchises that have done this before, or were you looking at other business models and merging some version thereof? What are the balances of management, of coaching of anything else? They were trying to think of something that would be like. I think one of the big skills is, I definitely do not know the answer to everything and if youre able to Basically I do think I can solve anything. I love our chances this year, sincerely. Like Jeff Eisenband on Facebook. You can always have free coffee. So I'm never a great example of where the balance is and what the cut off is in everything because it's all one big puzzle to me. Talk about that nuance because like you were saying, from the outside in, you could say all the players have it made. Peter Feigin: Just, just listen, just listen. Feigin got the funding approved in the next couple months, and the Bucks signed a 30-year lease to stay in Milwaukee. And we'll get to social injustice in a bit. It was important for us for our players, for our organization, for the city to stand up. It's there is no time balance, so it's kind of surreal. The entity at the center of the controversy the Milwaukee Bucks didn't waste time jumping in. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's kind of where is the balance? How do you balance with that and how do you create that menu that people can pick and choose from? It's about doing things for the right reasons. I think one of the things Jason of Beverly Hills, who was the designer and the manufacturer did, we just had this awesome element that the top of the ring came off and became a pendant on your, that you could actually wear as a necklace. Thats. Talk about it, you transition now from the Knicks and your consulting gig to the president of the Bucks. And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. When I was looking at the website, I was like, man, I cant wait to taste that chicken. His rise from recruiter's president, handing out parking tickets in the Buck's lot, working for social justice in the epicenter of the global movement, and his unique leadership style. Michael Red: Giannis Antetokounmpo and that team is so special to watch. But was like loved and I think Im addicted. If I become that guy, I dont need to play anymore. Absolutely. So, how do we figure out and reorganize on the senior leadership pattern. Ive never seen less arguing in a serious pickup game, said Adam Keefe, a former N.B.A. Peter Feigin: Listen. And a diverse community gives us diverse thought, gives us better outcomes. You got into really like, "How do we create resources for people to just talk about how they're feeling, about how they vent, about how do they get support for their lives?" There are follow-up emails if his friends are slow to respond. But you got to remember, there's the rest of the neighborhood and we've got to continue to focus on the task at hand. How we build our brand and how we build our awareness and likability around that, it's just kind of one of those no-brainers, too. Everythings compounded we happen to have picked Giannis in a draft, like in, as the 16th pick. How do we make this more than equal?" There is an honor system. This years edition comes stamped with the Roman numeral XXVIII, to commemorate the games 28 years of existence. There's no way that the reverence, the likeability and kind of the coolness of the Milwaukee can't be a team and a city that the whole world cheers for in such a big way. And have you seen that shift a little bit in the city since Milwaukee is kind of spearheading that, the Bucks? Wednesday, June 20 7:00 AM What the heck do we do, like everybody else? I think to be successful here and take it from a very fast talking, sometimes lazy speaking New Yorker, who swears too much and does everything. Make this the best operation, the best facilities and the best place to be because we're going to go compete with everybody to win a championship and nobody's going to question how great Milwaukee is." I think that was a necessity. And Khris parks in a handicap space, because five minutes he's in. And the task at hand here is like the more successful we are on the court, the more successful we are on the business, the more opportunity we will have to do other things. We don't have a business, not sure when we will have a business. Id been in a big market. John: Unbelievable. "Instantaneously, overnight, we have 30 million people playing NBA 2K around the world, probably more, so we begin a league and we have competition on a global basis. Michael Red: That's great advice. This is probably the best hour of the week. So, then you start thinking about really building a district in a small city within a city. Here is your example of everything you read everything you hear, everything he does is true. People will ask me all the time like, "How would you respond these times, Mike, as a player?" Giannis Antetokounmpo is the gift that keeps on giving for Bucks' management. John: Yeah. But, boy, you talk about how you go to sleep like the night, a night in March, in the middle of March last year thinking like, "Oh, my God. John: Your mom was part of the George Lois generation and Jerry Della Femina and then Donny Deutschs father David Deutsch. How do we talk beyond just coming to Milwaukee, but how do we do business together? Youre going to have a lot of fun. He ran companies like Alma and Posner and cosmetics. Michael Red: The podcast, as you know, is all about betting on yourself and talk about what that means to you, Peter, like betting on yourself. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Im sure somehow our paths will cross. It's definitely not brain surgery. And like, "Hey, you got to hear my idea," or something. Now, the lockdown has forced some of The Runs longstanding members to confront their athletic mortality. I'll talk with her about her students and kind of support her while she's correcting her papers. I guarantee youll find motivation and guidance from this remarkable man. On the team, it takes extreme like investment to keep it. We closed our restaurants down. Feigin, 50, calls his game the Saturday Morning Run popularly known among its members as The Run or S.M.R. and he has a massive collection of T-shirts to prove it. Thats what we call our volunteering. And I know you had a background in marketing and you worked with the Knicks at certain points in your career. But if Woodhouse had any qualms about digging in on defense against various titans of industry, he quickly learned that everyone was competitive. Welcome to the impact podcast, Peter. Not only do you have to have the best facilities, the best resources, no reason for anybody to say, What want to be, you got to be good people. Peter: We took the lumps and then, yeah, I had my dream job when I was in my mid-20s as in Madison Square Garden like running marketing for the New York Knicks and I thought I could have died and gone to heaven and thats, I lived breathed in the Knicks basketball and Ranger hockey, it was the greatest.
