I rode this trail yesterday (7th April 2015) – and it is a gem of rail trail. These bridges were almost 500m long and were on the Lilydale side of Yarra Glen. It was also supposed to link the Gippsland line with Spencer Street (now Southern Cross) station prior to the construction of the viaduct between Flinders and Spencer Street stations. This extension will bring the rail trail to over 50kms in length. From Fairfield to East Malvern it is known as the Anniversary Trail. Construction of the first stage of the Yarra Valley Rail Trail from Lilydale to Yarra Glen will start this month. It is good to see maintenance work being done to the trail to improve the surface in parts (especially the bridge) – but I’m glad it remains gravel and hasn’t been sealed. Some minor storm damage to the new section of the trail around Mt Lilydale Mercy College was recently repaired by extending the sealed section further down the hill.
