Dowland was a restless reviser, constantly updating and rearranging earlier works with increasingly fanciful ornamentation and richer harmonies. When I first began to play the lute in the early 1990s, my brother-in-law (an audiophile and record collector) gave me a cassette tape upon which he had recorded German lutenist Walter Gerwig‘s 1965 Nonesuch LP Johann Sebastian Bach: Lute Music. Each volume of O’Dette’s Dowland’s Complete Lute Works received the prestigious French Diapason d’Or, and the 5-CD boxed set received the Diapason d’Or Of The Year Award (1995, 1997). The 20th-century guitar renaissance, for which Julian Bream can take no small amount of credit, is represented by six discs (two of concertos), including works by Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Brouwer, Maxwell Davies, Henze, Rawsthorne and Walton – many written specially for him. British guitarist Julian Bream is one of the greatest players of the 20th century. Unfortunately the recording – made with a pair of stereo microphones in crossed hypercardoid configuration – do not capture an atmosphere of warmth and intimacy in step with the performance’s beauty and depth.
